How to Install an eSIM: A Beginner's Guide

Stop worrying about technology. Get connected in 5 minutes with this simple walkthrough.

Installing an eSIM might sound technical, but it is actually easier than changing a physical SIM card. You don't need to find a paperclip to open the tray, and you don't risk losing your tiny plastic chip. Here is everything you need to know to get started.

Before You Start: The Checklist

Before you buy an eSIM, ensure you meet these two requirements:

  1. Is your phone unlocked? Your phone must not be locked to a specific carrier (like AT&T or Verizon). If you bought your phone on a contract, call your carrier to unlock it.
  2. Is your phone compatible? Most iPhones from XR/XS onwards and most modern Androids support eSIM. Use our Compatibility Checker to be sure.
  3. Do you have WiFi? You need an internet connection to install the eSIM profile. Do this at home or at the airport using free WiFi.

Method 1: QR Code (The Universal Way)

This works for almost all providers (Airalo, Holafly, Nomad, etc.). You will receive a QR code via email after purchase.

Step 1: Open Settings

iPhone: Go to Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) > Add eSIM.

Android: Go to Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > Add (+).

Step 2: Scan the Code

Select "Use QR Code" and scan the code sent to your email.
Tip: If you only have one device, you can usually take a screenshot of the QR code and select "Open Photos" to scan it from your gallery, or enter the manual activation code provided.

Step 3: Label Your Plan

Your phone will ask you to label the new line. We recommend calling it "Travel" or the name of the country (e.g., "Japan").

Step 4: Configure Settings

Default Line (Voice/SMS): Keep this as "Primary" (your home SIM) so you can still receive texts.

Mobile Data: Select your new "Travel" eSIM.

Cellular Data Switching: Turn this OFF to prevent your phone from accidentally using your expensive home data.

Method 2: Direct App Installation (The Easiest Way)

Providers like Airalo and Nomad have apps that can install the eSIM for you with one tap.

  1. Download the provider's app.
  2. Purchase your plan.
  3. Go to "My eSIMs" and tap "Install eSIM".
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts. It will automatically open your phone settings and guide you through the process.

When You Arrive: Activation

Most eSIMs will not activate until they connect to the supported network in the destination country. This means you can safely install the eSIM while you are still at home.

Crucial Step: When you land, go to your eSIM settings and turn Data Roaming ON. This is required for most travel eSIMs to work.

Troubleshooting

"Unable to Activate eSIM": This usually means you don't have a stable WiFi connection. Connect to WiFi and try again.

"PDP Authentication Failure": This often means your APN settings are wrong. Check the email from your provider; sometimes you need to manually type in an APN name (e.g., "globaldata").
